1986, a year to remember.
In the spring of 1986, the Tri-City area (Midland, Bay City, Saginaw) experienced a 100-year flood, the kind of major flooding that only occurs every 100 years. Rain poured froth from the heavens for hours and hours every day for 30 days.
In downtown Midland two rivers merge, the Tittabawassee and Chippewa. These rivers, as well as the tributaries and creeks around these rivers, flooded to biblical proportions. Midland’s Tridge, a three legged bridge spanning the area these rivers meet, was flooded. As was may of the out laying bridges that lead out of Midland to surrounding towns, Bay City and Saginaw.
Many people homes were flooded, sewage lines in parts of Midland backed up in basements; our local newspaper, The Midland Daily News, had to temporarily abandon it’s building to print elsewhere; residents living on the low banks of the Chippewa or Tittabawassee rivers had flooding in their homes and yards.
My husband and I lived in town at the time and were un-effected but my in laws has two feet of sewage water back up in their basement. I’m glad I won’t be around for the next 100-year flood.
